Motorpoint to create 30 jobs at 20th used car retail store

Motorpoint has started a recruitment drive to attract staff for its 20th used car retail site, which is set to open in Ipswich in May.

One of two planned site openings in H1 2023 – alongside Milton Keynes – the used car supermarket PLC’s new location will become one of five network additions since Motorpoint announced its “ambitious” mid-term growth plan to reach £2 billion turnover back in June 2021.

And work has started to recruit a team for the 120-car facility near to EMG’s MG Motor UK dealership on the Suffolk town’s West End Road.

Motorpoint’s head of talent acquisition, Luke Chapman, said: “People are at the heart of Motorpoint’s success. We are proud to consistently top The Best Automotive Companies to Work For League for employee engagement. We are also an active member of the Automotive 30% Club, an organisation that campaigns for gender balance in the automotive sector.

“We are keen to hear from people who have a strong customer service background perhaps already work in the general retail and hospitality sector and are looking to make their next career move.”

Motorpoint recently recruited Kal Singh as its new chief operating officer. Singh joined the motor retailer from Dreams, where he spent three years as COO responsible for supply chain, manufacturing, health & safety and trading its Feather & Black brand.

Last month Motorpoint chief executive Mark Carpenter insisted the car supermarket group would succeed in its goal of becoming a “highly profitable market leader” despite faltering finance commissions and used vehicle margins.

A full-year 2022 trading update revealed that, despite 17% turnover growth, to £1.06 billion, faltering consumer appetite, reduced finance commissions and the impact of falling used electric vehicle (EV) values had all impacted profitability.

Motorpoint’s regional sales director Chris Goodison is confident the new store will contribute to the group’s future success and prove a hit with used car buyers across the Ipswich, Cambridgeshire and wider East Anglian area, however.

Goodison said: “The opening of Motorpoint Ipswich can only be great news for local motorists.”
